Elk Rapids Public Schools
Windemuller designed and installed a comprehensive district-wide Access Control System to enhance security across all Elk Rapids Public Schools facilities. The system includes both exterior and interior doors, using a wireless HES/Sargent lock and hub setup integrated with the Verkada Access Control platform. More than 200 doors are now managed under a single, unified system, giving the district consistent and reliable control over access and monitoring.
Installation was completed in phases by building, beginning with Mill Creek Academy and continuing through Elk Rapids High School, Lakeland Elementary, and the Bus Garage. Cherryland Middle School, which remains under construction, will be completed in stages to align with ongoing building work.
One of the project’s primary challenges involved cutting in approximately 167 strikes without damaging existing door frames while maintaining compatibility with current hardware. For newer storefront frames, technicians needed to fish cabling discreetly to avoid exposed conduit. To address these challenges, Windemuller conducted in-house training with Assa Abloy before installation, focusing on proper strike installation and Verkada system programming. Technicians were assigned to tasks that matched their expertise, with cross-training provided to ensure quality and efficiency throughout the project.
The completed system is now fully operational and performing as designed. Feedback from the district has been overwhelmingly positive, noting both the reliability and ease of use of the new system. By automating classroom and workroom locks, the new access control network minimizes human error and strengthens safety for staff and students across the district.
